africa is not a country. we in the west often refer to african music but what is that exactly? it could be myriad, almost unimaginably different forms of music that bear little relation to each other, as after all africa is a vast continent that is larger than the united states, australia and the whole of europe combined. these four tracks showcase some of those different forms of music from across the continent. there is some cosmic synth drenched proto-house, an afro-beat call to arms, a hypnotic juju workout and a rough and ready, relentless lo fi west african banger. all proceeds will go to human rights justice group, nigeria.

following the recent release of so low, a compilation of early ‘80s synth, industrial and cold wave classics and undiscovered gems curated by optimo’s jd twitch aka keith mcivor, the vinyl factory are set to release specially commissioned remixes of two tracks on the 16-track compilation by rising uk producer powell and hamburg’s helena hauff. powell’s pneumatic sound is perfectly suited to ‘49 second romance’ by german minimalists p1/e, which he deftly deconstructs, while hauff adds glistening synths to belgian electro-industrial group the klinik’s ‘moving hands’ for a driving, nocturnal version.

the album is a soundtrack of music inspired by the movie rubble kings and is out globally via mass appeal records. produced by longtime run the jewels collaborator little shalimar, the album features appearances from bun b, ghostface killah, killer mike, tunde adebimpe, mr muthaf*kin exquire, boldy james, cuz lightyear, ka and roxiny, in addition to run the jewels. scoring the film was the first time little shalimar set out to make period music. half of the music on this album was taken directly from the score and is heavily indebted to ‘60s and ‘70s soul and funk music. for the new tunes shalimar sampled joints from the score and created new beats out of them.

by all accounts, whiskey disco has matured. each release unique, but compiled meticulously to meet some of the highest standards in the edit community. wd45 continues the trajectory with 4 tracks combining equal parts soul, boogie and disco. rastanils cuts up cheesy obscurity to reveal heavy disco vibes—this edit was smashed by mcde at numerous festivals in 2015. next up, the intriguing corsican brothers reappear after a 5 year absence from whiskey disco with a sliced version of i like it, beefed up bass and space on the platters with a touch of dub. side b exemplifies the weirdness only a b-side can… albions disco chopper is a stretched and phased party jam that does not stop. move to the inside for the lengthy and epic big time, a 9 minute exploration into rocking disco roots, courtesy of the eponymously named blaxploitation movie from 1977.
